Bibliographic Information: Seuss, Dr., and James Stevenson. I Am Not Going to Get up Today! New York: Beginner Book, 1987. Print.
Brief Annotation: This is a book about a little boy who doesn’t want to wake up in the morning, so he decides to sleep and sleep and sleep. His mom calls people from all over to try to wake him up but he is just so tired and content that he won’t wake up until he is ready.
Grade Level: Kindergarten-2
Reader who will like this: Students may really connect to this book because we all have those mornings where it is hard to get up and we just want to sleep all day long. I could see this being a book that almost all students will like and laugh at.
Rating/Response: 4, this book is a funny book that is easy to read. Like most Dr. Seuss books, there are many rhyming words that can make it somewhat difficult for beginner readers. But it is an easy book to relate to, which makes it even more fun to read.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: Has anyone ever wanted to sleep all day and not do anything?
Reading Strategy: Free Choice (Picture)
Rationale for Strategy: This is a fun book to read and it could be used for a lesson or a free choice book for students to read.
