Just a Dream

Bibliographic Information: Van, Allsburg C. Just a Dream. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1990. Print.

Brief Annotation: Walter doesn’t care at all about the environment, but when he has a dream about what they future might be, he decides to change his ways.

Genre: Fiction

Grade Level: 3-6

Readers who will like this: Children who like reading about real world issues, children who feel passionate about taking care of the environment.

Rating/Response: 3 I thought this book was a little too long.  However, the pictures are interesting and it gives children an opportunity to really think about the world and how they treat it.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: Have you ever littered or seen someone litter?  How do you feel about it?

Reading Strategy: Inferences

Rationale for Strategy: This book is a good book for inferences because they are really able to connect their experiences with what is happening in the book.  It would make sense to talk to students about what they see happening in the world, and what they can do to change it.
