Jouanah: A Hmong Cinderella

Bibliographic Information: Coburn, Jewell Reinhart., Tzexa Cherta. Lee, and Anne Sibley O’Brien. Jouanah, a Hmong Cinderella. Arcadia, CA: Shen’s, 1996. Print.

Brief Annotation: This book is about a Hmong girl name Jouanah whose father remarried after their mother has been turned into a cow and treated poorly.

Grade Level: 3-5

Readers who will like this: Children who likes fairy tales and different cultures.

Rating/Response: 4 I thought this book was a great read because this is the Hmong’s version of Cinderella.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: What do you think this book will have in common of the American tale: Cinderella?

Reading Strategy: Questioning

Rationale for Strategy: This book would be great for questioning because there many versions of Cinderella and students can ask questions and maybe even research about more cultures that have similar stories to the American tale of Cinderella.
