Bibliographic Information: Cannon, J. (1997). Verdi. San Diego, Calif: Harcourt Brace.
Brief Annotation: Verdi is a young yellow snake who is in no hurry to grow up into one of the larger, more lethargic green snakes he sees in the jungle.
Genre: Fiction, Fantasy
Grade Level: 3-5
Readers who will like this: Children who like animals, children who like the jungle, children who like descriptive language and beautiful illustrations.
Rating/Response: 5 This charming and funny story is full of great language and detailed illustrations. It’s about being true to yourself – Verdi’s new green skin does not mask his vivacious, youthful ways as he had feared.
One question you would ask before a read aloud: What is something you like about yourself that makes you special?
Reading Strategy: Free Choice
Rationale for Strategy: This book is just a lot of fun, and is a good reminder of being true to oneself and being proud of who you are. I wouldn’t necessarily pair it with any other standards, though it would be a good first day or science (reptile, snake, trait/adaptation) read.
