Readers who will like this: This is a book for all types of readers.  Being a young adult, I enjoyed reading this book and I know that people younger and people older than me would enjoy it as well.  In particular, people who have immigrated from a different country to the United States may relate greatly to this book.

Rating/Response: 5 I enjoyed reading this book because it kept me questioning what was going to happen next.  I really enjoyed that the back of the book provided a synopsis of the Chinese during the late 1800’s.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: By looking at the picture on the front of this book and also considering the title, what do you think this book is about?

Reading Strategy: Social Studies

Rationale for Strategy: This book is about a real-life historical situation that many immigrants had to face.  It is a book that can be taught during a Social Studies unit.
