Ten, Nine, Eight

Bibliographic Information: Bang, M. (1991). Ten, nine, eight. New York: Mulberry Books.

Brief Annotation: As a girl and her father get ready for bedtime, they count down – from 10 to 1 – the things in her bedroom.

Genre: Fiction, poetry

Grade Level: K-2

Readers who will like this: Children who enjoy rhymes and patterns, bedtime rituals, numbers and counting.

Rating/Response: 4 A very sweet and simple book that makes for a quick read aloud selection. I imagine listeners would be eager to follow along with the counting down and rhymes as well.

One question you would ask before a read aloud: What do you do as you get ready for bed?

Reading Strategy: Mathematics

Rationale for Strategy: The simple number identification and counting in both directions aids in introducing younger students to math skills and concepts. Noticing patterns and shapes in the illustrations are good additional math skills to introduce.
